Welcome to the web home of me, Jim Bower.

I'm told there is a hairy American metal guitarist with the same name.
That's not me. I am a less hairy English songwriter from Leeds.

Over many millions of years I have made what in my opinion is marvellous pop and roll music. This is where I put it on display.

You are most welcome to have a look round, play some tunes, have a sandwich, whatever.

Play loud!

"Insanely catchy, densely packed, seamless pop perfection is the aim: and of the 13 songs not one misses by more than a whisker. At every level and in every department it's a classic." Whisperin and Hollerin (10/10)

“A spirited, effervescent and truly
enticing piece of work...genius.” contactmusic.com

“Blackly humorous, witty, catchy, genuinely inventive,
and cleverer than the Kaiser Chiefs” tasty fanzine

"Stonkingly good....should stride the Earth with utter confidence" subba-cultcha.com

“Hovers perilously over the unfashionable and dabbles with the pretentious but manages to maintain a toe-hold on healthy power pop.” Sandman magazine

"Whether you’ve experienced Shatner before or not, I recommend you check out their finest hour. It will definitely strike a chord." thebeatsurrender.co.uk

“I was pleasantly surprised by this ” 21stcenturymusic.com

"It’s really great having Shatner back, and on this type of form we’ll be seeing much more of them"
Vibrations magazine

"This is an important album, not just in the context of local music...listen and be amazed."
The Music Guru Online

"Classic guitar pop...they undoubtedly know how to write a decent tune...ambitious and multilayered."
The Leeds Guide

"This is an album whose tunes will hook into your brain until intrusive surgery is needed to dig 'em out. The weakest tracks would happily be used as singles by other bands."
Mono magazine

"Tight, atmospheric pop rock...confident arrangements. Maybe one day the kids will realise that cool is not all that cool, until then Shatner may have to make do with a few good record reviews."
Leedsmusicscene.net

"For a local band, their ambition is frightening. who else would conceive, endeavour and make a 13-tack concept album concerning timeless time? The truth is, no-one had the sheer Shatner knackers to at least try, and these guys pull the job off with aplomb. Amazing, but devilishly simple, catchy music; heck, it's metronomic!"
No-Title magazine

Very well conceived, extremely well crafted and beautifully delivered... a superb piece of pop escapism that's absolutely rammed with professionalism an overflowing with quality...I just wonder whether Shatner end up putting themselves outside the commercial loop simply by being too stylish and too maturely creative. Thirteen O'Clock' is a real pleasure to partake by putting musical finesse, educated story-telling and contemporary poetry back into pop-rock It really is a classy piece of work and Shatner are quite clearly a pretty unique band - I love it!!

Anticlockwise

If it's in then we get out of it
And if it's out we're into it again
We were it, but then they changed what it was
Now we're what the hell, we're now and then

I don't think we're growing up
In fact I think we're growing down
Going round and round and round
The wrong way round

Now i realise we're going anticlockwise
Against the flow of time and the prevailing tide
We're going anticlockwise

When everyone you know is treading water
Then it's time to swim against the flow
Generation gaps can go both ways
You can rebel against the one below

I don't think we're growing old
In fact I think we're growing young
And our song is still remaining to be sung

Now I realise we're going anticlockwise
Against the flow of time and the prevailing tide
We're going anticlockwise

You're the immovable object

Everybody sees
The way the air all around us
Is either boiling
Or it's starting to freeze
It's obviously true
That I’m an accident waiting to happen
And I'm happening to you

And everybody knows the score
There isn't any point
In evading it anymore
Everybody knows it's right

Someone Else's Life

My suit doesn't suit me
My skin doesn't fit me
And neither does my hair
Doing my job
Is more than my job's worth
It's a job in itself to care
None of my folks get any of my jokes
My wife doesn't understand me
My friends arent so friendly
My relatives are relatively alien to me

I looked in the mirror on Monday
Guess I wasnt feeling myself
I looked in the mirror on Tuesday
And found I was somebody else
Living someone else's life

Don't know how it could be
The life I can see
Well it just isn't me
No it just isn't me

This isn't my thing
It isn't my style
It's really not my bag
And here's a little song to
Ask the bloke it all belongs to
If he wants it back
I don't know my face
It's been slowly replaced
By something less appealing
I've developed an aversion
To this old and faded version
And a sinking feeling

I looked in the mirror on Wednesday
A stranger looked me in the eyes
I looked in the mirror on Thursday
Saw someone I don't recognise
Living someone else's life

Don't know how it could be
The life I can see
Well it just isn't me
No it just isn't me
Oh, someone else's life
Don't know how it could be
The life I can see
Well it just isn't me
No it just isn't me

I don't know how it happened
I don't know when it happened
I don't know why it happened
But i know it happened

I looked in the mirror on Friday
I've kind of got used to it now
I looked in the mirror this weekend
Will I finally learn to somehow
Live someone else's life?

Four thirtysomethings who really ought to know better have managed to craft a near-perfect pop gem. ‘Energise’ stands out as one of the most uplifting, not to mention unexpected, musical achievements of 2005
leedsmusicscene.net

Energise isn't burdened with any deadwood to speak of. It's a likeable listen from front to back with precious little need of the skip button. If the idea of undersung thirtysomethings making relevant guitar pop sounds highly illogical, then hear ‘Energise’ first. It's illogically good.
whisperinandhollerin.com

There's a real human and honest feel to this whole album, something that gets under your skin, whether you want it there or not. It's one small step for wry tongue-in-cheekiness, a giant leap for out-and-out good tunes
themusicguru.co.uk

Enterprise-sized hooks, tunes as catchy as the best tractor beam.. but really, there isn't anything trekky about this album. The key is that Shatner really know their pop music. Most importantly, they don't care what's cool and what isn't - they probably don't even know. That level of detachment means they can make the songs they want. Sci-fi geekery never sounded so good.
Sandman magazine

Pop that covers a lot of ground - and they can really play
'Vibrations' fanzine

This is never going to be considered a cool and/or fashionable album but there are more important things such as melodies and lyrics that actually mean something. ‘Energise’ is a record worth checking out.

I have seen the future
There's some haircuts to beware of
There's some fashions to avoid
I'll just say no I'd rather not
The music's mainly awful
And though drugs are still unlawful
Everybody takes a drawerful
Which I guess explains a lot

We were right about computers
But there are no laser shooters
And there's still no hover motors
And no hi-rise monorail
We don't look up to the stars
There’s no colonies on mars
There's no alien artifacts
They never found the holy grail

I have seen the future

I have seen the future
And it's really quite disturbing
All the terrorists are crazy
And the president is worse
Now we're all celebrities
On our reality TVs
We got porno DVDs
From straight to pedophile perverse

We are going grey
And we are often heard to say
"Aren't the policemen getting younger
Oh the youth of today"
I have seen the future
And it's really not so great
But I know that I will wake up
Back in 1978

Sleeping beauty lies
Not in this world
She's in the sky with diamonds
Getting high with simple Simons
She's in for a surprise

Now here comes the kiss
The kiss of life
The sunlight's warm embrace
Will slowly melt
the shadows from her face

See, dreams
are only for the sleeping
So pinch yourself
its wakeywakey time

Come on - rise and shine

Neither living nor dead
Somewhere else instead
Hibernating
Waiting for the dawning
Of a long forgotten morning
Come on - get out of bed

Time to break the spell
You're hypnotised
By the rhythm of daily routine
You're living in
The moments inbetween

See, chance is only for the taking
And rules for breaking
You're only marking time

Come on - rise and shine

Here comes the sun

Now watch it shine

Parallel Worlds

Well there's a world
where grass is truly greener
Another where the sea is pure Ribena
Alternative realities exist right here
So Infinite, so strange
(you get the idea)

So there's a world
where hell has turned to heaven
And there's a world
where 9 -11 never dawned
If there's a world
where Jews call Arabs brothers
Then there's a world
where you and me are lovers

Worlds in parallel
Worlds at tangents
Worlds but a few can see
Some not far from our own
And crossing the line
Would suit me just fine
So come and live in mine

I think we're heading in
the same direction
But somehow we don't seem
to meet along the way
A journey made without an intersection
Because somehow as well
our worlds are parallel

Worlds in parallel
Worlds at tangents
Worlds but a few can see
Some not far from our own
It wouldn't take much
To get you in touch
with parallel worlds of your own

Girls Like You

Girls like you are out of bounds
You're off the scale and on the town
You're in the pink
And you're so up on what's going down
Girls like you cause accidents
And other unforeseen events
You'd think that girls like you
Were rare as summer snow
But no, it isn't so,
There's girls like you
most everywhere I go

Girls like you

Well, I gave up drugs and cigarettes
And alcohol, and my regrets
But I just don't know
If I'll just say no to you just yet
'Cause girls like you
Make men like me
Behave like boys
Round a christmas tree
We want to open up the parcel
But we know we're not allowed
And you're the one
And baby, two's a crowd

You're a pain in the neck
The way you turn my head
You make me lose the thread
Where was I?

Girls like you shine like the sun
On a plate of snacks
You're the creamy bun
You're the forbidden fruit
oh yummity yum yum yum
Girls like you make perfect sense
But you're not cheap
High maintenance
You'd have me wrapped around your finger
Oh - resistance futile, I obey
No, I won't live
From day to day that way

Girls like you
And so do I

but
Timephone

I'm the old man you will become
Talking on the timephone from 2041
I have a message I have something to say
Before you waste your life away

Try and love
If you believe in anything make it love
Don't be surprised if life don't bring you
Wealth, success, your heart's desire
All could go in flood or fire
Aiming low is aiming higher - Love

Give me memories I can't recall
Give me debts and denture sets
Yeah I can take it all
A pickled liver and lungs of coal
But don't you mess with my soul

Try and love
If you believe in anything make it love
Don't be surprised if life don't bring you
Wealth, success, eternal bliss
Infinity in every kiss
There's only one thing you would miss
And that's love

Where was I ?
Sometimes I lose track of what I'm saying
Sometimes I lose track of who I am
I'm losing my marbles and my body's decaying
And the world spins faster to a slower man
I don't get about much
So live while you can

Don't you bring me pain, don't cause regret
Don't give me cause to remember
What I rather would forget
It's time to wake up, and it's time to move on
Before the moment is gone

Try and love
And if you can't just do your best to love
It's a challenge, it's a test
So, smell the roses while you may
Carpe Diem, sieze the day
My money's running out
so once more I say....Just...love

When the war is over
If something worthwhile survives
Let's settle our differences
and live our lives
Free from the prejudice
Free from the pain
There'll be no more holocausts
Never again

In days of judgement
In times of trial
The Devil's come to drag you down
The last half mile
Till we raise our heads as brothers
Till we raise a smile

When the war is over
When bad blood has washed downstream
We'll be sleeping with the enemy
Now it's safe to dream
We're not always the guys in chains
Or the bodies in bags
We'll be lighting a torch and soon
We'll be burning the flags

The winter of our discontent
The oil black skies
Two bullies in the playground
With two black eyes
When the storm before the calm has gone
When we realise

When the war is over
If a brave new world really dawns
And everything's in pieces
and we're only the pawns
But it's checkmate for kings and queens
and bishops and knights
Let's turn on enlightenment
Let's turn on the lights

but
Pennies from hell

spThey don't exist in real space
Spirited from place to place
By modem lines and fax machines
Pixel dreams on terminal screens
There the test of who's the best
And they feed you, you need to
Give your life to something which
Never seems to make you rich

Pennies from Hell
Pennies from Hell
Has anybody here got a soul to sell?
Pennies from Hell
Pennies from Hell

The market's down, you got the devil to pay
But he won't let you work today
He rose unseen
His spirit claw
Reached up to bolt the factory door
Rags to riches
How he switches
His favours
God save us
At a stroke we're back to rags
Living cold in carrier bags

Pennies from Hell
Pennies from Hell
Has anybody here got a soul to sell?
Pennies from Hell
Pennies from Hell

A million here, a billion there
Potential percentage market share
My evangelical sales technique
Will bring you heaven and a penthouse suite
You can't buck the market, son
Gonna make a killing out of bombs and guns
The world is my casino, see
I'm playing with your currency
Make no mistake, the stakes are high
Sell sell sell
Buy buy buy
Goodbye...

It's sound financial advice
How they shine, how they entice
Everybody has a price

For various reasons I was teaching myself video editing in early 2010, and thouht this might be an apropriate song to visualise. It's a combination of stuff I did myself and stuff I borrowed from the internet!

Magic roundabout
If I was sane
I wouldn't come round here again
I'm not, so
Here I am and here we go again

Somehow I'm always back for more
Stuck with you in a revolving door

Don't you
Feel a sense of deja vu
Strung out
On a magic roundabout with you

We'll spin a corkscrew down to Hell
Before we stop to break the spell
Don't want to drag you down as well

I shouldn't be doing this, but I am
And you know, I really don't give a damn

Love is
Love is something else than this
But love's not
Something we forgot in any kiss

You can keep your marriage vows
You can milk your holy cows
You can have domestic rows

I shouldn't be doing this, but it's nice
I don't recall asking for your advice

If I was sane
I wouldn't come round here again
I'm not, so
Here I am and here we go again

She said 'I've been up all night
I've seen the world by double ended candlelight
I've been down all day
This feeling doesn't want to go away
And it's just like any other day'

Did you ever get the feeling
That your mind's outside of you?
Watching yor body do all of the things
That your body will usually do

Did you ever get the feeling
Somewhere you mislaid your soul
All so routine you can work the machine
Without needing a means of control

Well that's how I feel
Right now
Unreal

She said 'no doubt
You say I've got a say, I think I wanna shout
My brain's a sponge that's been wrung out
Need more than all the love the Beatles sung about
Maybe it's something to get hung about

Did you ever feel transparent
Like you're no longer really here
People pass throiugh you
And do nothing to you
A ghost trying hard to appear

Did you ever seek the daylight
From the pit of the wishing well
On autopilot
unable to smile at
the joke that your life starts to tell

Well that's how I feel

Butterfly

Who will send the storm across the sea?
Who will bring together you and me?

From chance remark to war
Chinese whispers roar

It begins with the beating wings of a butterfly
The ripples in the air she makes as she flies by
Go onwards and upwards as they multiply

Who will make a difference to the world
Who knows where it leads when boy meets girl

From raindrops rivers flow
Oaks from acorns grow

It begins with the beating wings of a butterfly
The smallest decisions affect divisions, where destinies lie
You count, we all count
Might as well try

Nothing means nothing now
Everything means something now
Nothing means nothing now
Everything means something now

Just a butterfly

How's Your Love Life?

How's your father?
How's your mam?
Did your sister pass her exam?
Are you still on lonely street?
Maybe after work on Thursday we could grab a bite to eat?

How's your love life?
I just thought I'd ask
If you don't mind that is
Though it's none of my biz
How's your love life?
Are you still with whatshisname?
Or is there a chance
He's a former romance?

I knew we'd meet again somehow
Mmmm, that's fascinating, wow
Yeah me too, well, obviously
Seems to me like I was made for you were made for me

How's your love life?
Is it lovely, is it lively?
'Cause if not, maybe I could hit the spot
How's your love life?
If it's not too personal, I'd like to know
If you'll give it a go

Nothing heavy, no big deal
No commitment, how do you feel?

How's your love life?
Really, you're a Libra?
Well now, who'd have thought?
That's my favourite sort
How's your love life?
Are you into all the things that I'm into
Can I get into you?
How's your love life?
If it needs improving like my love life does
You and me could be 'us'
How's your love life?
Or if you can't handle love
I think we must
Consider some lust

Alive

spOne crazy summer afternoon
We thought we saw the light
We were only young, naive and stoned
But we were right

You never really know
You know you never really know
You never ever really know
I think you're still alive
I'm pretty sure you're still alive
At least a part of you survived

We got older I suppose
And time makes you forget
Now I remember everything
And time isn't out for me yet

Why should today be just another day?
Tomorrow could never arrive
I'm standing on a hillside
Feeling glad to be alive

I heard a voice running round in my head
If you're not living, you might as well be dead

There's stars up in the sky
Stars up in the sky
There's great big stars up in the sky
Large huge great big stars up in the sky

Why should today be just another day?
Tomorrow could never arrive
I'm standing on a hillside
Feeling glad to be alive

I still hear you laughing
Hear you sing the same old song
What's the beer like where you are?
Get 'em in, it won't be long

Why should today be just another day?
Tomorrow could never arrive
I'm standing by your graveside
Feeling glad to be alive

Just as I thought

spWe met in a previous life
You were called Ug, and I was called Ug too
You hit me repeatedly with bits of tree
It was the thing to do

You've left me squashed and burned and shot
And somehow that explains a lot
Of what we are and what we're not

Our astrological birth sign stars are destined to colide in 2010
If you superimpose our palm prints it spells 'bloody Norah, not again'
And in the Martian alphabet
Our names combined are swear words yet
I'd let you smoke my cigarette

God made you from clay and me from plasticine, he thought you'd be my friend
You're strong but grey and brittle and I'm colourful but easier to bend
Now we're the best of enemies
God help a world of yous and mes
Here's some more analogies

Nostradamus saw us
But he thought we were too scary to foretell
If ifs and ands were pots and pans, you'd throw the thes and buts and ifs as well
I'm tired of whys and wherefores now
So to pre-empt another row
I'm a pig and you're a cow

I was dreaming
Rocks were falling from the sky
Woke up screaming
'Fate will get me and I don't want to die"

Hold tightly
Step lightly now
Enlightened
Not frightened now

The fear of the pain does more harm than the pain
There's never a rainbow without any rain

I was hit by
I was hit by
I was hit by
I was hit by a meteorite
But feel all right
I was hit by
I was hit by
I was hit by
I was hit by a meteorite
Hit by you tonight

Over cautious
A steel umbrella on my arm
In case of harm
But I'm beter now
Better now I faced my fears
And cried my tears

I nightly
Sleep tightly now
I blew it
But I'm through it now

The fear of the pain does more harm than the pain
There's never a rainbow without any rain

I was hit by
I was hit by
I was hit by
I was hit by a meteorite
But feel all right

Repairs - to fix us together

When something is broken in need of repairs
You don't send it tumbling down the stairs
Spent all that time waiting for a sign
Waiting in vain, cause it never came, and you're to blame

You were sweet, now you're sour
You need some spice in your life

Repairs - to fix us together

We panic, we're manic, we need a mechanic
The bill made you ill that the cowboy sent
I've got the tools and a manual of rules
When time is spent and you repent
I'll prevent an accident

But stop eating away at me please

About your yesterdays
But I don't have a say in your tomorrows
It's time to go our separate ways

All over now

You were living it up
Now you're living it down
You ran out of credit and it's time to pay
It's all over, it's all over the town

It's over now
All over now

Why didn't you lie to me?
You could have lied
You would have got away with it
Right from the start
You took my heart
But you had to go and play with it

Soon the tide will rise
(I wouldn't be surprised)
The sea will vapourise
(through a hole in the skies)
It's a lesson
It's a blessing in a damn good disguise
It's time for us to say our goodbyes

(Goodbye, goodbye)

It's over now
All over now

Rolex
Your rolex wristwatch
Says you're so top notch
And hey big spender
To the opposite gender

You think that popularity is bought
So you grunty grunt
And snorty snorty snort

You are careering
With power steering
Towards a big crash
You'll burn your moustache

You're happy cause your wallet is full
But your only friend is flexible

Your tendy carphone
Hangs on your headstone
You're a miserable old sod
You need The Freud Squad

You're not so damn amazing as you think
And I'd love to watch your kitchen sink

In the unlikely even that anyone wants a copy of this lot, just email

A very prolific time - a lot of songs recorded quickly at home.

These are not supposed to sound professional. They are demo songs, which I always thought I would record 'properly' but never did. They were recorded in various bedrooms using

1) A Yamaha four-track cassette recorder

4t

2) A Yamaha mini-keyboard

keyboard

3) A guitar plus some effects pedals.

4) A microphone.

5) A reverb unit.

So, I don't want to hear any comments about how low-tech and home made these sound, of course they bloody do, that's the whole point!

but
Scientists in Love

A lonely cell will die
And I'm an x without a y
An e without an mc squared
And other formulai

A briany BSC
Seeks a similar PHD
To form the church of love research
And test the theory

Well, I'm making my computer make a chart
Of how you give me palpitations of the heart
It printed out and left no doubt
That you're my counterpart
So whisper sweet equations in my ear
Point my telescope towards the stars above
And accelerate my particles
We're scientists in love

Well, we got the chemistry
And you got the biology
Forget about the physics
We can do it physically
I want to see you oscillate
And how the molecules vibrate
We'll mix our genes and watch the screens
To see how they mutate

Let's experiment with scientific sex
It's a pleasure, we can measure the effects
You look so fab down in the lab
You're steaming up my specs
Wear your slinky little radiation suit
With your see through sexy polythene gloves
And accelerate my particles
We're scientists in love

Erm...it seems to be some kind of energy field
of a type previously unknown

We'll have a baby in a jar
Who's first words are algebra
A dog on twenty fags a day
To drive the bubble car

My conclusion is that I don't have a clue
Why they say that one and one is more than two
I need a date for data, girl,
and I'm in love with you
So whisper sweet equations in my ear
Point my telescope towards the stars above
And accelerate my particles
We're scientists in love

but
Holiday in heaven

HOLIDAY IN HEAVEN

Holiday in Heaven...

The beach is clean, hey have a swim
The water's holy, jump right in
Mister Wolfgang Amadeus
Will come to play us some voilin
The sun is out, blue skies above
The air is sweet
'Cause the cars all run on love

Got myself a souvenir
Some duty free nectar
and two crates of beer
Everyone's dying to come here
It's christmas all year

Holiday in Heaven

Have a smoke, hey, drink as well
Now you're in Heaven, what the Hell
Elvis, Bolan, Moon and Bing
Come to play and sing at your hotel
Landed safe, the flight was blessed
An astral plane with an angel stewardess

Customs took my currency
The kiss me quick halos were totally free
Just like Great Granddad and me
It's the only way to be

Illegal to be athiest
But with God serving cocktails
He's hard to resist
There's not much that I miss
I'm staying like this

Holiday in Heaven
Paradise is very nice

THESE THINGS HAPPEN

These things happen...

Spare a thought
when you think it's all over
The world was made from a supernova
The universe was made to fall apart
You eat your greens
you give your body exercise
But given time
everything and everybody dies
The tiny bits of you
find something new to start

These things happen...

Black holes are there to fall into
Bad luck
looks for somebody to happen to
You're always wiser after the event
You're paranoid
but you didn't really ought ta
Just remember
that you never give a thought ta
All the things you happened to prevent

These things happen...
They happen all the time...
Make them happen!

(God DOES play dice with the cosmos)
but
scary future

Here is your present
You won't like it a lot
But just like your past
It's the only present you've got
Look after it well now
Don't give yourself Hell now
By telling yourself that Hell's coming
When maybe it's not
Your scary future
Has doom and gloom
destruction and death and disease
We all need positive possibilities
For the future

I don't have a crystal ball
I always walk like this
Come on laugh with me
It's going to be too late
If you wait
And your fate
Is a fait accomplis
- that would be a tragedy

You know
You reap what you sow
Seems like the Earth isn't fertile terrain
for those good things to grow
But if you leave it
You'll never retrieve it
And you will live out your nightmares
'Cuase there's nowhere else you could go
Your scary future
Has house and kids
Workaday responsibilities
Where are the infinite possibilities
For the future

but
The fire inside

I can't run
Any further than I already have done
I can't hide
When everything I'm hiding from is all inside
I can't sleep
Too much in my head, too many secrets to keep

I can't complain

I need a miracle
But I'm agnostic, see
It's got to come from me
I've been stoking up the fire inside
Building up a head of steam
I'll set it free
And when it happens
Don't be stood in front of me

I can't tell
If I'm sick or if I'm sick of being well
I can't wait
Till the date when I hate to hesitate
I can't think
Everytime I do, I have to pour another drink

I can't explain

Held by a ball and chain
In demolition swing
To knock down everything
I've been stoking up the fire inside
Building up a head of steam
I'll set it free
And when it happens
Don't be stood in front of me

Somewhere over the rainbow
Pigs will fly

I'm spinning plates
But I'm so tired of spinning plates
Think I might just let 'em break
I've been stoking up the fire inside
Building up a head of steam
I'll set it free
And when it happens
Hope you're stood in front of me

but
Regeneration game

Something plugged me in
Charged me with adrenalin
And sparks will fly
It's do or die
And I'm gonna win

Feel like a lightbulb would light up in my hands
Nothing could ever be the same
I'm playing the Regeneration Game

Scientists do articles
On my electric particles
I'm a superconductor
On a super bus
Now I got the energy if you got the time
Me and you got things to do
And mountains to climb

Is it a bird?
Is it a plane?
Nothing could ever be the same
I'll stake my life, I'll stake my claim
Tear it in two and start again
I'm playing the Regeneration Game

I don't need acid in my battery
There's lots and lots
Of megawatts
And megawhys in me

but
I want to believe

I want to believe in natural justice
I want to believe in the powers that be
And the powers above
I want to believe in God almighty
I want to believe in the power of life
And the power of love

But I'm not ready to say
I believe in these things today
But I want to believe

I want to believe in flying saucers
I want to say 'yes there's a thing in Loch Ness
and a Santa Claus'
I want to believe in human kindness
I want to believe there's a way to be one
And an end to all wars

And if I don't believe it myself
I'll never convince someone else
But I want to believe

I want to believe there's a reason for living
I want to believe we're at the stage
of beginning a brand new age

If there's one thing I know to be true
Most of all I want to believe in you
Believe in you, believe in you
There's one thing I know to be true
I want to believe in you

but
Disasterman

Good evening, I'm Disasterman
And let me tell you why
Every place I ever live
The people start to die
Every country, every town
Population going down like flies

I was in Armenia, but left before the quake
Went out to Ethiopia just for a break
I thought that Bangladesh was just a breeze
And Hillsborough was quite a squeeze

My friends get postcards
From Beirut and from Baghdad
Saying 'this is not the greatest time I've had'
Something vague and black
Lurks behind my back
He's got bad breath
And his name is Mr Death

Life was great with real estate
In beautiful Chernobyl
Till our reactor cracked
A flash a bang and a wobble
There were all these nasty atoms flying around
We went six feet underground

There's someone up there
With a cruel sense of humour
Making me feel like I'm responsible
For the world's despair
It's a cross to bear
But to be fair
These incidents are rare

More disasters than anybody needs
But rest assured it's changed now I'm in Leeds

(And remember that these things are really not as common as you may think, so don't have nightmares....do sleep well)

but
Trip

I came here to pick myself off the ground
It was appalling
Falling
Down

There's so many kinds of pick-me-ups here
My destination
Amsterdam station
Crazy town

Stroll up
Roll up
Hole up
That man's beard is terribly weird

Waiting to be whisked away
Home is just a whisker away
It's another journey day
I'll be on my way

Blitz my senses
Rocky, lager and lights
A goggle eyed stranger
Dangerous
Now I'm heading home still stupefied
Cotton wool round my brain
On a bright yellow train
To Schiphol again

Have your passport ready
That big guard looks terribly hard

Waiting to be whisked away
Home is just a whisker away
It's another journey day
Fly away

Think some sense
To ease the turbulence
It was amazing
Raising
Hell
Can they tell
That I don't feel very well?
Hope the dog didn't smell
My bag very well
On the carousel

Grounded
Hounded
Surrounded
Than man loves
To wear rubber gloves

Waiting to be whisked away
Home is just a whisker away
It's another journey day

Excuse me sir
Would you mind stepping this way?

but
kidnapped

I'm rewinding
I'm turning my life back a page
I've been finding
Some difficulties in the modern age
Here's some holes, some great big gaps
A curious memory lapse
Amnesia's easier perhaps

I'd get clued up
If I had the slightest clue
I get screwed up
When I'm nailed down and none of it rings true
And in the corner of my eye
A big bug bog-eyed guy
Who I just can't identify

Ice in the desert
Snow on the sun
Somebody somewhere is having some fun
Messed with my body
Messed with my brain
Move to the city
In case they come back again

It's tomorrow
Today was cancelled, so it seems
I was borrowed
And left with dazed and carzy dreams
A vague idea that I took flight
A big bright beam of light
Immobilised in fearful fright

Noon is at midnight
Sunset at dawn
Here's my dilemma
Secrets or scorn
They're so elusive
They give me no choice
It's still inconclusive
But I hear her voice

Hey that's impossible!
Yes I know
Have you been to hospital?
I dare not go
You must be joking boy
What have you been smoking, boy?

Lie back on the couch. When I count to three, you will be completely relaxed.
One
Two
Three

In hypnosis
I tell a strange disturbing tale
Strange psychosis - how long have little green men been on your trail?
As I recall
Since I was just as small
And open to it all
And I could fly
Before I learned to crawl

Our reunion
Will come when all is said and done,
we'll make a start
A communion
We're single beings with communal heart
And as the star of man descends
To snide and undignified ends
Two distant consciousnesses blend

Kidnapped by aliens
Honest I was
No explanation
No why or because
Messed with my body
Messed with my brain
I understand why they say I'm insane

She moved down South
To hide in ice

Draped herself

In shades of dusk
Where daylight and darkness meet

But it's written in your hand

I've got nothing except my life
But that's enough

You are completely surrounded
You are completely surrounded
You are completely surrounded by everything

Saw your smile
In the patterns on the wall
Take a while
Create a shape I can recall
Not of this time
Not of this place
Not of this world
You just jumped off and floated into space

Lonely child
An imaginary friend
We'll walk for miles
(and miles and miles and miles and miles)
And we'll meet you at the end

The end of life
The gates of paradise
End of this world
Come back once or twice to give advice

You know you're living in a maze
A puzzle called the universe
You live, you learn and you rehearse
A world of questions within questions
And the answers don't exist
And life's a calculated risk

Here's another burning issue
And here's another trivial pursuit

You know you're living in a maze
A puzzle called the universe
You live, you learn and you rehearse
A world of questions within questions
And the answers don't exist
And life's a calculated risk

You work to crack the highway codes
You can negotiate the roads
Then your galaxy explodes
It looks pointless, and it is
Philosophy just makes it worse
You're not the first

Imagine the city folded in two
Horizon like crumpled paper staring at you
Your ways and routines
Are no longer a shield
And the law of gravity has been repealed

Some gatecrashers came to my party
They arrived in incredible cars
They had rose-tinted specs
And they said 'later we expect
To be surfing on the deserts of Mars
Some gatecrashers came to my party

Imagine the city hanging like sky
Imagine how music looks solidified
Dots become squares and squares become cubes
When you throw the laws of physics
down the tubes

Some gatecrashers came to my party
They brought their own special effects
They all had 4-D specs
They got me totally wrecked
And maybe they'll visit you next
Some gatecrashers came to my party

A billion light years from the final idea
The cosmos just hanging there, a bright chandelier
A snap of your fingers
and you're back in your tomb
Your unexpected guests have left the room

Some gatecrashers came to my party
They left in their incredible cars
I hope they come back again
But they've got other minds to bend
And me, I started gawking at stars

Some gatecrashers came to my party

Soldiers with banana guns
And priests in fancy dress
Spaced out hippy policemen
In hallucogenic stress
Cities painted pink and blue
And overgrown with weeds
Yes a change of government
Is what this planet needs

Everything is different now
Everything is different now
Everything is different now
I'm President of the World

Trains will never run on time
When I remove the clocks
You'll find the wacky Windsors
In a park under a box
I order this disorder
I decree this anarchy
I desire as messiah
This shall come to be

Everyone is crazy now
Everyone is lazy now
Everyone's amazed at how
I'm President of the World

All the dogs will shout 'miaow'
All the cats go 'bow wow wow wow wow'
Holy cow
There's a hell of a row
Now I'm President of the World

You know it makes sense

I got a barmy army
And they're armed with custard pies
You will know I'm honest
'Cause I'll only give you lies
If you think I'm mental
And I should be locked away
Take a closer look
At all the fools in charge today

Everyone is zany now
Cockup cockamamey now
No-one can restrain me now
I'm President of the World

Everything is falling to bits again
In hysterics convulsions and fits again
Tell your children you can remember when
I was President of the World

If you thought the recordings in "An X without a Y" were as low-tech as it gets, think again!

The main thing you'll notice here is the drum sound. With the exception of the track 'Big Head," for which I used a borrowed keyboard with its own drum sound, the rhythm parts here were done using the legendary Commodore 64 computer.
C64

You young whippersnappers these days are used to super sampled drum sounds, well if you were in the mid 80s and skint, you had to make do with the hisses and clunks produced by one of these. The control screen looked something like this (I couldn't find an image of the actual one I used, but this was similar)

screen

So, these songs never had a collective title really...but if there was an album containing these tracks, I'd call it Humdrum Machine, since it's the drum machine that provides the 'character'.

LOW TECH HOME RECORDINGS 1985-89
but
Flap my arms and fly

I am Jesus H Christ
And any day now
I'm going to land in your hemisphere
I am really an android
With super strength and
I'm coming to spill your beer

Oh really, is it true?
No, in fact it is a lie
What's got into you?
I just wish that I could flap my arms and fly

I'm from 2510
And armed with my zap gun
I'm coming to save your kind
I'm a telepath
And I know that you're crazy
'Cause I read it in your mind

Oh really, is it true?
No, in fact it is a lie
What's got into you?
I just wish that I could flap my arms and fly

I know I'm only human
But to me, it's not enough
I get my highs from sci fi
And all that kind of stuff
I've never known a world
Without the Klingons on TV
The normal world of boys and girls
Was alien to me
Now I expect the special effects
I've always been denied
A plot that's got the lot
To make my life adjustified
True they'll call me loony
Till the day I up and die
It seems insane to be mundane
I want to live in the sky

I'm beelzebub
I'll burn all the bad guys
Till they're Kentucky fried
I'm a million years old
And I don't feel too marvellous
So you better run and hide

Oh really, is it true?
Like I said, it is a lie
What's got into you?
I just wish that I could flap my arms and
fly
away
from
you

but
Big Head

Shut up and listen
I've got something to tell you

You've got a fragile ego
One crack from me and watch it overflow
With fountains of fortissimo
You're such a generalissimo
You might just say hello
If you're certain you can stoop so low
High and mighty, vertigo
I want to know what makes you so
Magnifico

Big head
Yes, big head
Big head big head
That is what I said

You can't be bolder
You've got a chain of chip shops
On your shoulder
You left me feeling colder in
An atmosphere that's smouldering
You're so maddening

Big head
Yes, big head
Big head big head
That is what I said

You think you're so terriffic
And so flipping marvellous
So to be specific you're so very vacuuous
And very nauseous
Not so very gorgeous
Don't you think I'm envious

And all that vanity
Borders on insanity
You're an abnormaility
Get out of my locaility
Your head's expanding
You better leave it out on the landing
Uncommonly commanding
So damnably demanding
No misunderstanding

Big head
Yes, big head
Egg head, dead head
That is what I said

You think you're so terriffic
And so flipping marvellous
So to be specific you're so very vacuuous

Oh yes

but
I rebuilt my girlfriend

I built her likeness
Actual size
Two light bulbs shining through her eyes
A tape recorder in her head
Plays back the things we always said
We stay up late then go to bed
She's not quite dead

She left some clothes behind
And sixty strands of hair
An interesting indentation in her armchair
With her dimensions
I formed my intentions
And with a little care
I rebuilt my girlfriend
Now she will always be there

I made such an effort
With my effigy
It could be her beside of me
Made her from glue and toilet rolls
Some furry toys and jelly moulds
From memory those curves and folds
I even made her heart of gold

No manual, no instructions
Just like Frankenstein
I build dramatic reconstructions
of perfect crimes
My friend and opponent's
Reduced to components
And with a little time
I rebuilt my girlfriend
Now she will always be mine

She is such a model citizen
She will never make demands
How we laugh on the occasions when
Pieces fall of in my hands
Took her out
And heard the neighbours shout
"She travels better now you fixed the wheels"
They're so insensitive to the way she feels

Maybe it's madness
And maybe it's not
You better stick with what you've got
You'll spend a lifetime by the phone
When you get back there's no-one home
Though I prefer the skin and bone
I cannot moan
I'm not alone

but
Dear Diary

Goodbye old life
Yes you were fun
But what did you achieve?
Talking big never earned a man
The right to be believed
There's no escaping it
When your conscience
Won't stop tugging at your sleeve

Goodbye old times
Yes you were fun
But now you have to go
Fear of change creates anachronisms
Stuck and running slow
I feel so left behind
But I don't know
Where I'm supposed to go

Get out of your easy chair
You know it's killing you just sitting there
You say 'Dear Diary
Whay can't you tell me what's in front of me?'

If you remain
Your brain will drain away

It hit me fair and squarely
I began to mourn the wasted time
The feeling twisted me inside
The thought of mountains there to climb
I was deaf dumb and blind
But I dared not act to ease my troubled mind

Direct your energy
Don't be afraid of making enemies
You say 'Dear Diary
Whay can't you tell me what's my destiny?'

If you remain
Your brain will drain away

but
For ever endeavour

When you've heard it all
And banged your fists against the wall
You know the ropes
You know the taste of tears
You can talk
But no-one hears
In a gilded cage
Hear news about the day and age
You feel so weak and all the words you speak
Fade away

We're so poor and powerless
We can't answer your distress
But where there's a will there's a way

When your hands are tied
And something deep inside you died
The walls are solid, all the doors are locked
The lines are down
The road is blocked
Through the cloak of night
We navigate towards the light
But when you run in just gets further away
Then it's day again

DOn't you know persistence pays
I'll see you in better days
'Cause where there's a will there's a way

Listen, life is hard
You know you didn't deal the cards
Just keep on trying, you will get there somehow
Do it now

Bad times they won't last forever
So for ever we endeavour
Where there's a will there's a way

DREAMING
Filmed at Haddon Hall, Leeds, April 1988

but
Dreaming

Blimey I just realised I'm dreaming
I can see through all of you, I'm scheming
Of a universe I can traverse inside my head
Can't get fucked up, 'cause I'm tucked up
Safe in bed

There must be a tasty woman
Somewhere in my brain
Or loads of childhood memories
I can live again

I just realised I'm dreaming, dreaming
Things are different when I'm dreaming, dreaming
This is my subconscious, window on my soul
It's much more interesting when I'm in control

Well now, let me see now, what can I do?
In the middle of a dream about singing to you
No inhibition, no punishment
And no dangerous thing
I have got until my clock goes ding-a-ding ding

There's so much potential
And so much to be enjoyed
We can go much deeper now
Me and Sigmund Freud

And I just realised I'm dreaming, dreaming
Things go wonky when I'm dreaming, dreaming
This is my subconscious, window on my soul
It's much more interesting when I'm in control

Here we are in slumberland
This dream is getting out of hand
Landscape is flowing to the sea
It's all a little bit much for me
My feet aren't touching the floor
I'm not even here any more

And I just realised I'm dreaming, dreaming, yeah!

This is my day, and I can feel it
Spreading over rooftops and under my skin
Through my window I see it all now
Maybe I can't fly but I could breathe it all in
I feel magnificent and I feel great
And winter's gone
And everything is stretching to the sun
I'm ready to believe that things are looking up
And life has just begun

My television set has safely been defused
I'm on a wavelength TV companies don't use
Tune into me between the channels
Where it's all confused
You may hear me
All too clearly
Say 'This is the news"

There are no wars, well, not in my street
And if that isn't so today I don't want to know
Richard whitmore says 'Life is heavy'
If you ask me, I disagree, I'm in with its flow
I feel invincibe and I feel great
And time and tide are on my side,
I even like the rain
I'm ready to believe that things are looking up
I'm on my feet again

When there is nothing left
There's nothing left to lose
I can consider myself lucky if I choose
Yesterday seems far away, I really had the blues
But I survived,
And I 'm alive
And now this is the news

I took it all too serious to be amused
But at a lime like this my feelings can't be bruised
I feel so strong
It won't be long
Before you share my views
A voice between the chanels shouting
Hey! This is the news!

A man in white with a beard
A golden throne on a cloud
Love and wrath in abundance
Tells us what we're allowed
He's your friend in a crisis
He's on your side in a war
In charge of every religion
And if you're bad
He will give you what for
He will pull the lever
On the red trap door

Vengeance is mine
(I'm talking 'bout God)
Vengeance is mine (G-G-G-G-G-G-G-God)
Find me someone
With the authority to explain
Is it too much for the ordinary brain?

Some say he's here to control us
Some say he's here to assist
Some they say he's a spaceman
And some say he doesn't exist
He knows all your indiscretions
He moves in mysterious ways
He's not very good television
He says he made the universe in seven days
But it will only take the one
For it to be erased

Vengeance is mine
(I'm talking 'bout God)
Vengeance is mine (G-G-G-G-G-G-G-God)
I want results
If the answers are there to find
Is it too much for the ordinary mind?

He's got ten dimensions
and good intentions
I forgot to mention
We are his invention
He's the object of theology
A subject of psychology
Causes disagreements
In the subject of biology

Alah, Jehovah and Jah
I'm talking 'bout God
La la la la la la la
I'm singing 'bout God
Twinkle twinkle twinkle little star
I'm raving 'bout God

All the structures of power
Built with the strength of belief
Built on the backs of believers
'Cause every tribe needs a chief
It's not so good for his image
They teach us to love what we fear
Communities and nations
Divided by their creed so dear
Yes they're making a mess of a good idea

Vengeance is mine
(I'm talking 'bout God)
Vengeance is mine (G-G-G-G-G-G-G-God)
I hope to God
That he isn't the way they said
Is it too much for the ordinary head?

It's a long long time away
For the world it is the opening day
Today it all begins
Given time and laws of chance
Patterns form and we begin to dance and sing

Do you remember you and me?
We came crawling from the sea
Brand new ways for us to be
Some achieved an early break
Like the lizards and the snakes
The dinosaurs were their mistakes

If I die, then I want to die laughing
If I live, then I just want to live
And so we replicate
Towards another state
Towards another kind of fate

We were living in the trees
Then we went around on hands and knees

On a walk I found some grain
I used my loaf, I used my brain
On the land I would remain
Community communicate
Keep the reaper from your gate
Co-operate, co-ordinate

If I die, then the pattern continues
Even if my kind disappears
So what's the big idea
You say the time is near
You'll lay to waste a billion years
And a billion years to come
And a billion years to come

All the brilliant years to come

I'm what you call a regular guy
I am born, I live, one day I die

Hello universe
I've come to talk with you
You're not so hot on conversation
But what you say is true

Preachers from all kinds of churches
tell me how
I should side with them
against the heathen crowd

But look at me now

Head above waterline
I'll tell you what I see
It was so deep and meaningless
At the bottom of the sea
I don't know where I'll go
The tide will carry me
I shake the ocean from my eyes
And now it's all in front of me

Now it's all in front of me
And nothing gets on top of me

I talk for days without a sound
With the sky that follows me around
What on Earth am I waiting for
Tomorrow there could be a third world war
And there won't be no me...no more

Hello universe
I've come to talk with you
You're not so hot on conversation
But what you say is true

Teachers of indoctrination curse and growl
Creatures of all strange persuasions silent now

Head above waterline

At the bottom of the sea

You are just a character
In my soap opera
In my play
Soon as you exit the womb
You will dance to my tune
I'm your creator
And when I get the gist
I'll give your life a twist
Sooner or later

I live outside of time
In a candle-lit crypt
All I know of life
Is what I put in the script
It's a lonely world
Your dramas will restore me
'Cause I am the author
and I write the stories

In centuries behind this door
I've written many wars
And many songs
Now it's lime to wake you up
Because I make you up
As I go along
You can consider your fate
You can prevaricate
With prediction
But to dispel your doubt
I can write you out
You are fiction

I do all the bestsellers in my universe
Everybody here reads my stories of Earth
It's the only world, it's in my mind
It's all me
'Cause I am the author
And I write the stories

I passed a jagged broken window
down a street I didn't know
Party slogan painted on the wall
I thought they died out 40 years ago
I met a girl a while ago
She said "The Holocaust's a hoax
The red conspiracy's to blame"
And other racist jokes

Recruiting for a great war
They die, the same old lie, a national pride
Something you can kill for
Somewhere for the patriots to hide

And die they will
And die they will

In the day of TV statesmen
In the day of TV smiles
Didn't I once see your face before
At the Nuremberg trials?

Suddenly it's 1914
Kitchener wants you to fight the hun
Getting bored with national interest
Take the myths and take the pills
And take the gun

A fat ex public schoolboy
Laughs that ignorance is bliss
His strong but simple minded soldiers
Do not realise this
You don't have to spell Swastika
To write it on a wall
Fortunately most ignore
A would-be Hitler's call

It's obvious

That iron fists go rusty
And flags are only cloth upon the wind
And empires built on hatred
Have not endured and never solved a thing

Dreaming

Frozen at a point in time
Cannot move to save your life
Panic screaming in your brain
Watch the bullet closing in

Shatter into fragments
All you know and did converges
Realise the truth
Brace yourself to die

Street is now a blur to you
Overdose of memory
No more plans for you to make
Last chance gone, now impact comes

Exploding in slow motion
Falling through a mist of twilight
Life is vapourising
Now I've lost control

Searching in the void
Looking for someone to turn to
Weightless and oblique
When black and white collide

Turning in the darkness
Burst into a blaze of sunlight
Memory has gone
This must be day one

Dreaming
Mary Mary Mary
Don't kill yourself for me
There are other ways
To set your spirit free
Mary Mary Mary
All the messages you send to me
Are wasted on my eyes
Why not let sleeping dogs lie
The way you lie to yourself

Oh Mary listen, you heard what I said
I don't care if roses are red
I don't care if violets are blue
Oh Mary, I'll never love you
Life's not like your dreams
Or boy meets girl magazines
Mary - on the contrary

Don't be so surprised
That I can make mistakes
I didn't realise
Your life could be at stake
Mary Mary Mary
Why not burn the photograph of me
That hangs around your neck
It keeps your soul in check
And keeps you tied to me

Oh Mary, listen, you heard what I said
You have got to get it into your head
I am telling you this 'cause I care
There are millions of people out there
Life's not like your dreams
Or boy meets girl magazines
Mary - on the contrary

Oh Mary learn your lesson
I don't want to be your obsession
I've told you why, work out how
Forget about me now
but
Dreaming

Shatter my windows and rattle my doors
No matter what I say, I am not only yours
Or about to be
I see my resistance flow down to that drain
Again and again will you kindly refrain
From pointing those big brown eyes at me
Who do I listen to?
The red one with the horns or the white one with the halo that looks as though it's about to crack?
Imagine that
I wish both their arguments weren't so convincing
And that's not me in the photo on the wall
And I'm wincing in his direction
And I say to him "what would you do?"

He replied "Don't look at me, you got yourself into this"
It's atempting thought
But what would you sacrifice for a kiss?

Internal combustion
Colliding oceans
Or a storm in a teacup
Perpetual emotion

I wish my resistance would curl up and die
Even when hiding the rules still apply, even out this far
How many people are pulling my strings
Eating my heart out and clipping my wings
Get me back to the bar
Both ways I win
Both ways I lose
I sometimes wish someone else would choose
And here she comes now
Oh no
Oh wow

She replied "Don't look at me, you got yourself into this"
It's atempting thought
But what would you sacrifice for a kiss?

Internal combustion
Colliding oceans
Or a storm in a teacup
Perpetual emotion

Dreaming

Oi! You! Stop that bloody noise! ORDER!

Order! Order!
Who's rattled my cage?
I saw you youngsters being naughty!
You wouldn't see any of that in my young day
What you need is a spell in the army
Or a short sharp shock
Drum some discipline into you
Aren't you proud of queen and country?
Listen to your elders and betters
I must have ORDER!

Look at you, you're downright scruffy
You probably like this noisy pop music
I blame the comprehensives
And the bloody communists!
What we need is more policemen
Make sure you all behave properly
I'm older, wiser and fatter
And I've got authority over you
So you must obey my ORDER!

Young people are to be seen and not heard
We'll put you into line, whip you into shape
I'm an upright citizen
Right minded, decent and clean
Public opinion is on my side
So are therefore power and justice
Times change
But I remain
The established ORDER!

Oi! Oi! Stop that bloody noise! ORDER!

but
Dreaming

It's the same old story
Virtue resides in the houses of the heartless
A narrow path for narrow minds
The values that they propogate to blind the public eye
Are sickeningly twisted
Keeping down their kids and keeping up with the Joneses
Never mind the starving millions
Hold your cutlery properly and smarten your appearance

Dance on the roof of their prison
Tear down their standards and hoist up your own
Drown out the war cries of righteous back benchers
Turn away from the brainwashed and go it alone
Woooooo ooo oo oo (and so on)

No wonder they prevail
With the crap that pours from media to subconscious
Preserving institutions
Encouraging people to keep themselves in line
It's mind control
Keeping down their kids and keeping up with the Joneses
Never mind the starving millions
But they sympathise with Russia 'cause of Pravda's propaganda

Dance on the roof of their prison
Tear down their standards and hoist up your own
Drown out the war cries of righteous back benchers
Turn away from the brainwashed and go it alone
Woooooo ooo oo oo (etc etc)

As if it was brand new

Oh he knew all the tricks

In his mind's eye
He became the man
Juist imagining
You wouldn't understand

Oh he knew all the tricks

The Meaning Of Life

Are you one of those numerous fools
Who live by someone else's rules
Life's a game you cannot really lose
As long as you live it how you choose

Have you been this way for very long?
The situation's been and now it's gone
I'd like to mention
I know the answer to the ultimate question

I'm as sharp as the proverbial knife
I know the meaning of life
Forget about your trouble and your strife
I know the meaning of life

You mind is frozen, I would like to state
You analyse and I create
There is no right there is no wrong
It all depends which side you're on

I'm as sharp as the proverbial knife
I know the meaning of life
Forget about your friends, your family and your wife
I know the meaning of life

I know the meaning (he knows)

You could say that I am under the influence of drugs
Or you could say that I am smug
I couldn't give a flying one for what you say
Don't you realise I know the way?

I'm as sharp as the proverbial knife
I know the meaning of life
Forget about rhyming a word with 'life'
I know the meaning of life

I know the meaning of life
I know the meaning of life
I know the meaning of life
The meaning, the meaning, the meaning of life

But I'm not telling you

'Mr Big' was one of my first 'proper' songs, written when I was around 9 years old. Re-recorded for a laugh in 2002
but
Mr Big
Over there, could it be
I can't believe my eyes
Dark glasses, macintosh
Why all this big disguise
No surprise

Mr Big, Mr Big
Why are you still around?
Mr Big, Mr Big
I'll shoot you to the ground, to the ground

Read your book, smoke your fag
just keep away from me
Questions are just a drag
So just shut up you see
and just let me be

Mr Big, Mr Big
Why are you still in town?
Mr Big, Mr Big
I'll shoot you to the ground, to the ground

Over there, could it be
I can't believe my eyes
Dark glasses, macintosh
Why all this big disguise
No surprise

Mr Big, Mr Big
Why are you still around?
Mr Big, Mr Big
I'll shoot you to the ground, to the ground

Mr Big, Mr Big
Why are you still in town?
Mr Big, Mr Big
I'll shoot you to the ground, to the ground

Likewise, this is a very silly and equally old song , also recorded in 2002
but
My Brother's Toenail
My brother's toenail....
